Hello everyone, last year this dawn redwood forest was beautiful and had many leaves and was dense. However, this year it only has a couple of leaves. One of the trees doesn't even have buds. How should I try to save this forest? Would?sphagnum moss be useful?

Looks like three dead and two suffering to me.
Lettisk moss grow up the trunks may be the reason. It needs to be removed gently without damaging the wet and soft bark.

Thanks, this tree has always had moss even when it had dense foliage. Only one tree doesn't have any buds the rest seem to have buds. I will take this forest out and put it into a large pot with sphagnum moss and bonsai soil without touching the roots.

The moss needs to go, that is the main concern here.

Ok thanks, should I use a brush to remove it from the trees? Should I remove it from the soil as well?

Yes, very careful remove it with a soft brush or tweezers.
Some people like moss on the soil surface for aestetic reasons, some dislike it for the reason that it tends to grow on the trunk. It does not make a huge difference for the tree as long as it does not grow up the trunk. So, up to you.

I removed the tree and put it in a large pot with sphagnum moss. Should I still fertilize it now?

You should never fertilize an unhealthy tree or a newly repotted tree. Yours is both unhealthy and newly repotted.
Did you remove the moss as well? Some batches of sphagnum will start to grow and make the issue even worse. Lets hope you have one that don't.
Good luck.
