Hi there,
Hi everyone, I have a black pine that has a lot of apical vigor and always makes me big buds only at the apex.
Last year I decided to follow it more closely and therefore I did a good scoring of everything.
This year has made some buds back and the usual top monsters, what do I do?
Pruning only the top and leave the little ones behind in peace or redesign it all?
That is the situation one week ago:
These are today, can I pruning ?
Even if they are short I want to break this apical dominance, do I break them in half?
Maybe with tweezers ....
I await advice, detailed if possible because I can't make peace with this essence
Thanks for your patience

What I do is reduceing every grow point on the tree just about this stage to just two of them. When the two remaining have extended to their full leangth I reduce size. A lot more in the top than in the rest of the tree. This method has given me a lot of backbudding to work on in the future.

Hi thank you for your reply, ok, so since I have just one bud on the apex I will work only this one right ? So you suggest not to broke them as a pruning now but wait maybe a couple of months and then cut them ?
Sorry nut I have not really experience with pines

Yes, where I have just one candle growing, I leave it until extended full leangth and prune it then. Harder in the top than in the rest of the tree. Its a question of balancing wigour in the tree.

Ok, and where there are also some other small buds back ? Like the second picture from the top...
There is some indicators that the candle is ready to be cut, ex. the change of colour ?

My candles are 15 cm or taller when I cut them back.

Good question and very important one. I am in south West Sweden. I cut candles sometime in mid or late june.
Look for the point when the candles are fully extended and starts to grow needle leangth. Check Youtube jbp decandelling or similar. Was a good help for me the first years.
