Hey everyone,I’ve got a field-grown Austrian black pine in my garden that I’d like to dig up next spring and eventually train as a bonsai. I’ve attached a couple of photos below. It has some nice trunk movement and early bark forming, but it’s quite tall, so I’ll likely need to shorten it and rebuild the structure over time.As this is my first field-grown tree, I’m looking for general advice on how best to approach this — when and how to dig it, how to handle the rootball, what kind of aftercare it needs, and how to start developing it into a bonsai which trying to get candles further down on the tree etc. (especially regarding trunk chops and style direction).Any insights or tips from those who’ve worked with Austrian black pines would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Lifting this spring is too? early in my opinion. I would continue developing it in ground for a few more years. Focusing on reduction, spring candle pruning and backbudding.

Hey, thanks for the reply! So you'd approach it like starting development in the ground and once it is sort of refined digging it out? From the photos, could you see what you would prune in the spring or how to start reducing size and getting more backbud and ramification? It is tough to tell from the photos, but the pine is roughly about 1m tall.?

Like you said, hard to suggest anything based on the photos. However, picture two show a y growth. Here it is possible to shose future trunk line.
I do not think it makes sense to do any heavy pruning right now, maybe just cut back the strongest branches of last years growth. This tree has never been trained for bonsai, the internodes is very long. Shortening buds in spring every year will promote backbudding and make it a usable bonsai material in the future. No reason to lift it before that. Cutting roots some 30-40 cm away from the tree makes sense. Compacting the root system and makes future lifting easier.
