Okay, thank you I give it a try and I’ll backreport the results.

7 weeks needed to get backbudding under the first layer. No rooting hormones was used. I see nothing new under the second layer, but the tree is pretty dense there.

Meanwhile, the lower branches also started to extending. I didn’t expect this before next spring, but the tree knows better.

A general question on layering. How do you keep the soil inside the plastic moist? When I have tried it here birds peck holes in the plastic and the dirt dries out.

I packing moist sphagnum around the ring, covering firmly with plastic (preferably that dark, but slightly opaque one) and poking holes up and down also to let moisture in and let the excess water out. If it’s not enough firm, it can dry faster. Time by time I control to touching the plastic or put the pinkie through an upper hole. If I feel it’s missing some moisture, I just spray the whole thing and the holes take care for the rest. That one I think sprayed 2-3 times during the 7 weeks, when we’ve had hot and dry days.

As for keeping the baggie moist.. Stop birds from getting to it? Odd though. Why would birds open the bags?

The two new sprouts are above the chop site. I’m wondering if not better to scratching them off to let more energy for the lower branches. What do y’all think?
