Hi everybody,
I just wanted to share with you my first attempt at airlayering a tree.
Within a relative's yard, I have performed 5 airlayers, 3 on a European Hornbeam and 2 on a Field Maple.
What do you think of the 2 examples I am posting?
The plan, once the airlayers have rooted, is to grow them into big pots, above a tile, to form a nebari and increase taper.

Hm.. I would have gone for thicker branches with good taper already in place.

Hard to tell from the picture, but are you sure you got all the bark off? It looks like you did not hit the wood, Which would result in bridging

That was my first impression too.
Too much green (cambium?) showing, I hope I am wrong !

Regarding thicker branches… yes I could have made the airlayers closer to the main trunk to have more taper… but I was a bit scared of removing full branches on my brother-in-law's trees….:ohmy:
As far as the complete removal of the bark… I think I have removed it all… but maybe you are right, I could have been more "aggressive" on the maple, but the hornbeam looks OK to me...
But as I said, I'm still a beginner and this was my very first attempt….
