So I have tropical species like Calliandra, Serissas, Pomegranate, Ficus Retusa that sit happily outside, but...
I used to bring some tropicals inside when the temperature dropped below 10? C, by the uncurtained windows, no heating, plenty of light. These lower temperatures occur not always, winters here are very mild. So it was in/out with the plants all winter.
Now I have decided to let them out this season, based on their need to rest and to be sure they will wake up in spring at the right time.
Question is, is it possible some of them will die of cold if the temperature suddenly drops to, let's say, 1? C? It happens sometimes.

As fat as I know, real frost is the killer. And plants that stay wet & coldfor a long time may suffer damage. But I have not heard of plants dying when tremps drop to 1c. The damage is cause by ice crystals building in the tissue, rupturing cellwalls. You need frost for this.

Thanks for answering leatherback. That's what I've been reading also. I will give it a try and hopefully post here the success (or failure) in 3 months time.

My Pomegramate stays out all winter and we had at least -6C last winter the other two no.
