I have read a number of contradicting care guides regarding azalea position up to and including one saying full sun except when in blume, to another saying shady but bright.

what are your experiences are with azaleas?

After killing a couple, I am afraid of even looking at them!

- Full sun: dried and died.
- Shade and watering when needed: died also...

That's encouraging. The care guides in German, which is where I live, say half-shade.

Do you have any idea why the ones in shade died?

When you read a care guide, be sure to find out where it was written and adjust to your location and your trees. To a maple tree in Rochester, NY, winter is mid October to mid March. Here in Birmingham, Al, winter is mid January, and sometimes part of February. Most guides say not to water every day. In August here, highs of 105F and lows of 95, you better water twice a day. I started repotting six weeks ago and have done all I am going to do while many have just started.

The tree that does real well in New York needs extra care here, meaning shade and not much sun in the hot part of summer.

So, use some judgement as you read different things. Fertilizer advice is mostly the same, I think, adjusted for calendars.

I am well aware that different places require different types of care. I was asking because I wanted to see what others' experiences were reagarding position.
