Hello,

I want to grow the thickness of my trunk. I have a branch that I'm currently using as a sacrifice to help with this.

I wanted to know whether trimming back all the growth in the top part of the tree will make the sacrifice grow bigger, quicker? Therefore making the trunk grow thicker over time.
Or should I leave the tree to grow all over, considering I'm planning a cut on the trunk in the future?

The tree was bought as a gift and it already had one top cut done to it. The resulting shoots were left unchecked and have grown into each other by the look of it. I've attached photos of this section and the cut.

With that straight trunk I would grow a low sacrificial branch. Cannot see any in the photos.

I would leave it alone until spring, if strong and vigourous clean up the top quite heavily and hope for good backbudding.
