In the ground to pre-bonsai was created by Lynette

I have several young trees that I purchased to develop into bonsai. I know that there is more to developing a good tree than just 'putting it in the ground' for a few years' and hoping it becomes good material! I am having trouble finding information on growing pre-bonsai, i.e. how often should I dig them up and root prune them? I assume it's not as often as I would if they were in a pot. Should I wire them? Let leaders grow or trunk chop?

I know it's a long process and requires a lot of patience to grow trees 'from scratch,' but I find the process appealing - if I can do it right!

Thanks for any help you can give me, or if you an direct me to a source of info!
