I agree totally about not letting it dry out and that it is more cold tolerant than people think.
The issue I am having is always conected to periods of low humidity. We usually have two periods of lower humidity per year. One in mid winter and one in early summer. My tree suffers every single time, but is amazing at recovery once humidity rises.
How about humidity at your location? Does it drop at any point of the year and is that the same period as you got aphid problems?

That's interesting and I have not personally experienced it because humidity is very consistent where I live, usually around 75%. So, from what you've told me it sounds like humidity must be one of the more important factors in keeping this species. I'm not certain what caused the aphid problems I had a couple of years ago. I may have been underwatering or underfeeding my tree back then.
