In Italy, in Sorrento, there are umbrella pines everywhere. They look somewhat like baobab but look like they should be bonsais.

Have any of our European members tried umbrella pines?

Hi, I live in Italy and I can tell you that all italian coastlines are full of them, either alone or grouped in rich forests.

The latin name is Pinus Pinea (also known as "Domestic Pine", in English "Stone Pine"), and it is quite an iconic landmark of our mediterranean environment.
It's not to be confused with Pinus Pinaster (or "Maritime Pine"), quite similar but with a more rounded crown.

I would also like to start one but honestly I am afraid they are not so suitable for bonsais.

Their needles are extremely long and, to get the famous umbrella shape, it would take really many years.
Even after 20-30 years trees maintain a rather "globe" crown and only get umbrella-like after many decades, by shedding the lower branches.

But, if anyone in the forum has tried it with success, please let us know!
