Jon,
Breaking the pot is the best option when your ready for re-potting. If you cut in to the roots while it's still in that pot, you don't know how much of the roots your cutting. That could e a disaster.
You're just coming in to spring in S.A. So you can start the work now.

Hey hein i havnt touched it yet, attached are some photos. It looks abit sickly to me? It is growing very slowly at the moment too. So with this rain in cape town im still going to wait until it warms up more. And hopefully the tree would be showing more vigorous growth

Hey Jon,

I don't think this tree looks "sickly" at all. a little sparce maybe however, all it needs is some TLC. I agree with *pinkham*...carefully break the pot (so you don't damage any of the beneficial roots) and repot this baby! It's Spring where you are so, providing you haven't done any recent major work on it, you can do some much needed root work. Then leave it to recover and don't fertilize during the recovery period. Water regularly according to the Lavender's needs. I think this would make your plant very happy and produce some nice results. I'm looking forward to following it's progression! :)

Thanks Leslie! I have thought about it and looked at old pictures that i took a few weeks back and it does appear to have grown abit, well the foliage on the top. Mom says i cant break the pot haha so i dont know what to do. NOTE: It looks like there is one tree in there but there are two. The long and lanky one that is a twin trunk is alive, the other is deadwood that i am either going to do a phoenix graft with or re-pot with the lavender again. What i am thinking of doing is chucking a whole lot more organic fertaliser on there and letting it get abit more strong and confident. Then i will take it out of it's current pot.

Justin did however tell me that lavender does not have a terribly long life span so that is in the back of my mind at the moment, that the tree might be on its way out. :( I hope not tho

Well, lavender is a shrub, and may in extreme cases up to a meter or so tall. Don't expect it to grow long leaders: It just won't. Lavender does not backbud (Or at least: Hardly). Keep that in mind.

If you want to het the plant out of the top, take a garden hose, and just flush the soild from in between the roots; The oils gone -> you can compress the rootbal and twist the plant out. Naturally, this will create loads of stressfor the plant, so figure out the ideal treatment for lavender in your climate first!

T o start: THey like it warm, don't mind very dry conditions, loads of base (lime). They are really 'made' for the mediteranean climate & soils
