Now is not a good time to prune maples. They bleed like crazy this time of the year. Just relax and watch the spring leafing. After mid summer you can make big cuts. Lots of time to show us photos so we can guide you better.

Hey, I'm adding my question here because it's similar to the original one. I have a Japanese Maple seedling I just potted on 4/20. It had some roots when I potted it, but nothing mature. Leaves are coming out and it's branching nicely now. The problem is, it's all at the top. I have about 15 inches of nothing before the branching starts.
I was thinking of making a cutting about halfway and propagating?a new tree. However, I'm not sure if it's too soon to do that. Any advice? Thanks

Just let your tree grow wild to thicken the trunk. Maybe put some wire on to create mowement. Maybe next repotting, remove taproot. Anything else is years away.
