Hi there - I inherited one single bonsai and pot about 18?years ago when my father died and have absolutely no experience. The tree has stood in my garden in the north of England in all weathers, but when it gets very cold I do wrap the pot in some fleece to stop it freezing. I guess the tree must be about 60 years old, but can somebody please identify it for me (some type of Juniper maybe?)… also any tips on keeping it alive and stopping any more branches from dying would?be much appreciated.?

Yes it is a juniper. I cannot tell what cultivar it is, but it really doesn't matter when it comes to care.

I think the dead branches has been facing a wall and died because it did not get enough sun.

There are absolutely no reason for covering a juniper in winter in UK. They take -20 degrees easily, something very rare in uk.?

So are you saying it will tolerate -20C in a pot only 30x20x8 cm in size?? That surprises me - but will save me a job!

In Sweden junipers in small pots tolerates -20 degrees. I cannot see why they should need protection in UK.

Absolutely right, all of my Junipers are out all winter, We have had a very mild wet winter, which is not good for them, but I would never cover mine.

Do you think I should leave the lower dead branches alone, or prune them off? If they’ll remain in place without harming the tree, I think it would give the tree a better balance visually? What do people think..?

Also, is there a way of finding out what type of juniper it is..?

I would cut some and leave some for Jin.

The species is chinese juniper. Juniperus chinensis. What specific cultivar is almost impossible to tell as there are a few very similar.

First thing I would do is clean the soil surface. Next I would remove most of the dead branches, one or two could be left for jinns, Then the other branches need to be pruned and wired.
