Tree ID and care advice was created by webie

I bought this little 名媛直播 a few days ago while I'm away on holiday and was wondering for a positive ID as the tag doesn't have a name on.?
I've used a plant ID app and it comes back as a Chinese Golden Larch, after reading up it seems it prefers a outdoor location as I was planning on keeping indoors. I live in north east UK so will it be safe to keep outside when winter arrives. My garden is north facing and receives the sun mostly on the afternoon so would it be ok set in a shade/sun location, I've read it like to be watered quite a bit and it said every day and in summer sometimes twice, obviously checking if it's dry or not is the best thing to do.? Anything else I should be doing to provide the best care possible?

Thanks for reading?

This small plant is Pseudolarix amabilis Golden Larch. It is totally hardy and as all plants belongs outside 365 days a year.
It may be necessary to water more than once a day but that is determined by the weather and how much the plant dries out. The position sounds fine. I suggest you buy a book and read about tree care.

I have never seen the species geoff mention, nor my own suggestion in real life. So take my suggestion as a qualified guess based on my knowledge of the bonsai market and on pictures online.

I do not dissagree with Geoff. It is just that my first hunch was budhist pine (Podocarpus macrophyllus). It seems to be a very common mallsai species in UK as we get quite a few questions on them here.

Note that I am not sure at all. Just wanted to be sure it is out there as the care is quite different to Geoffs suggestion.

Next time buying a tree, please ask the seller what it is. If they do not know, just walk away. People that do not know what tree species they sell most likelly have no idea about how to care for them.

Best is to buy from reputable bonsai nurceries. There are quite a few in UK. The two biggest is proboably greenwood and Herons. If you buy quality trees from them you support knowledge and quality rather than massproduction and massimport of low quality trees from species not suitable for your environment.

The needles seem a bit too long for Podocarpus, but I see what you mean. Now I am not so sure, but I agree with what you say about where to buy. There are shows where a lot of traders sell, and of course there a lot of good clubs and most have sale tables.

It does say pseudolariks on the tag but I think it's imported from NL so obviously the spelling is different. Google does come back as to the name Geoff suggested so probably just difference in spelling giving a different name.?

Will I have to protect when winter arrives? Depends on how bad a winter we get up here but probably -0/5c is the norm around here sometime a little lower if we get a bad winter ?

Thanks ?

Oh forgot to ask, can you recommend a good book that I could look to buy as there's lots out there and I'd like to make sure I get the right one?

Pseudolarix is the scientific name. Those name are almost always latin and always same in the whole world.

It is quite funny that you got a tree whos name was misspelled from Netherlands. After all that country is still teaching latin in basic shools (at least up to 2000 ish, maybe different now. Anyway, I would not trust a producer that sells misspelled trees.

If it is Golden Larch then it is hardy and does need any protection. There are many books, the ones by Peter Chan are good also the one that Dan Barton wrote and also harry Tomlinson. Harry Harrington has done several that are good.

Being from the Netherlands, we use both the Latin Larix and the Dutch Lariks. Also, Latin (and Greek) is only taught to the highest level in secondary school and only if you choose to go to these schools :)
