How to protect and still enjoy in winter? was created by Bonbonlight

I recently obtained a beautiful Deodar Cedar labeled "pre bonsai" but it looks exactly like bonsai to my novice eye. I realized there is a zone issue. My zone is 6 (although a solid zone 7 against the south facing house foundation area.) I've read it is a zone 7 tree and in a pot can reduce hardiness I think by 1-3 zones.?

The plan was to put it right by the south facing front door so I can enjoy seeing it all winter but now I'm wondering if that is possible. It would be outdoors on 5 ft elevated deck enclosed by wood below. Is there any way I can keep it there in winter? What if I put the container in a larger one? Either slide the existing pot into a larger pot and fill with mulch or gently repot it in a larger pot with soil. I don't mind not having the aesthetic of true bonsai with a larger pot. I just wanted to see this beautiful tree outdoors year round. The winter is a concern though.?

The last two winters have been really mild. It will also get protection and radiant heat from the siding by the front door. I wonder about it breaking dormancy from a couple warmer sunny days. How long of warmth does it take to endanger breaking dormancy? I'd rather not have to drag it into the unheated windowless garage and have to put artificial lights on it. I got it because I want to see it's beautiful needles in winter. Otherwise I could have gotten a beautiful but naked?larch which is a trooper of zone 2. : - ) Curious, is there a similar tree that would work better for my idea in future?

Is it destined to die there unless I hide it away in some other protected spot?

The roots are so thick in the pot that I can barely get my finger in there to determine if it needs water. I'm going to get a moisture reader to help with that.?

Pot is about 10x5". Here is a photo:

I think you are worrying about nothing. This species is hardy and must be allowed to be frosted. It is only a young plant at the moment, and at the appropriate time can be re potted. Watering in summer is no problem, almost certainly every day if it is hot. I do not protect any trees from frost of any degree, only from excessive rain.

If you get a lot of snow. Putting the tree on the ground and covering it in snow is the best. But you cannot enjoy it that much burried in snow. Second best is to bring it into a non heated greenhouse, shed, garage or similar. No light is needed during dormancy.
