Hi there i have a relatively sheltered back garden, direct sunlight for max 3 hours at the height of summer, clear skies above (ambient light not deep shade).

i am looking to suppliment with artificail lighting on a timer.
i have used these bulbs in the past (not for bonsai) and assume they would be acceptable? -? Pianta Grow Lights
Regarding timing, i can set it so sun rise and sun set so it would light/change daily with the seasons, would this be best? or what would be an acceptable schedule/ supplimentary LUX level
Tree in question is Quercus so not much need in the winter

Many thanks
John

In winter the Oak does not need any light. I cannot see the point of trying to supplement light, it sounds enough for what you have. You would need to have very strong lights and close to trees for it to be affective. Unless the tree is suffering, I don't think it is worth it.

With 3 hours of direct summer sun and clear ambient light, your oak likely doesn’t need supplemental lighting—especially in winter when it’s dormant. Those Pianta bulbs work for general growth, but for bonsai, you’d need much stronger lights (like full-spectrum LEDs) positioned very close to make a real difference. If the tree isn’t showing stress (weak growth, pale leaves), I’d skip the hassle.
