I repotted my Elm and its dropping leaves fast was created by 名媛直播DadFromUSA

So, my elm tree that I keep indoors year round was approaching the 2 year mark and I decided to use the same pot but replace the soil. Now it is dropping leaves. I am in the south east in the USA and this was my first bonsai. I used the same kind of soil and did very little root pruning, as in just the ends. Now the leaves are starting to yellow, get brittle and drop. This is an indoor tree (or I keep it inside year round) and it has never dropped leaves like this. I am watering it as normal and have changed nothing but the soil. My question is of it is normal to have the tree lose leaves after a soil change and very light root trimming? Thanks to all who are much more knowledgeable than myself.?

When elms is grown outdoors, loosing leafs after repotting is not normal. Judging from posts on this forum it seems like dropping leafs at any time is quite common on indoor grown elms. But I have no own experience. If temperature is above 0, I would recomend to put it outdoors in full shade and keep well watered. That is standard after care for all outdoors grown elms. Also make sure that the repot was done properly, that the tree is not wobbeling in the pot and there are no air pockets.

Trees expect a dormant period with cold weather and short days. The exact cold requirements vary, but most elms want a couple of months of winter. If they don't get winter it is sort of like a person not getting sleep. We might appear ro be OK for a day but we are going to crash. Trees might appear to be okay but they usually don't survive past a second year without dormancy.

I am in Birmingham, Alabama, which certainly counts as southeast. Winter is just about over and there won't be many cold nights, we temperatures drop below 50F/10C. If you put it outside it might be able to have enough dormancy to survive.?

Well spoken. My outdoor grown chinese elms is pruned from 20-30 cm long new growth 2-4 times per year. That is up to a meter of growth every year!? And our growing season is very short. This streangthen the trees to handle anything, including long periods below -10 degrees and heavy root pruning.

How much growth did you get out of the indoor grown elm year 2?
