Hi everyone, I’m new to bonsai care and need help identifying my tree. I’ve attached a photo showing its current state—some dead upper branches and new green growth. I’m in UK and it was bought as a gift.
I’d like to trim it but want to ensure I do it correctly. Can anyone identify the species (possible Ficus or Privet based on leaf shape) and suggest the best trimming approach for May 2025? Any tips on care would be appreciated too! Thank's

I would guess chinese sweet plum. But it is very hard to identify that week trees.

I would not prune this year, just focusing on health. Water, heat and full sun (IE outdoors). Possibly I would decide to cut everything dead after the summer solistice. But only if I was 100% sure it was dead, which I seldom is. If pruned, I would do it with quite a big safety distans from anything living. Flush cuts would be done next spring, but only if the tree is 100% healthy.
