I just picked up this crabapple and would greatly appreciate any advice on how to create some ramification.

I am not sure the right focus for this tree is ramification. I think it is in a much earlier stage where thickness, tapering, branch structure and nebari should be the focus.

Anyway: ramification is increased with these three teqnices:top pruning, fertilizing and branch selection.

Thanks for the input! I'm just at a loss of how to better develop the bottom third of the tree. If you had and advice how to better develop branch structure I'd love to hear it.

I understand the loss. But I have problem with the phrase "I just picked up". All you need to do right now is to learn how to grow a healthy tree. Meanwhile, just take a daily look at the tree and ask yourself what you want it to be in the future and how to get there.

I guess I could have done a better job of explaining myself. when I say I just picked up I mean it just came into my possession. It was not an impulse purchase. I have a few trees this one in particular is the one I am at a loss for. And I fully understand that it's a practice in patience. But thank you for again for the input I get what you are saying.

I did not make any asumption about how you got the tree. Just picked up, came into my possesion,
?or somebody just threw a tree on me. It makes no difference to me

It is the time line that bothers me. Just get your tree growing healthy. That is all that matters for a new tree.

It.is also important to understand why you shosed this particular tree. What did you see in it? Why did you get it?
