hi everyone,

purchased this lovely azalea from a garden centre last weekend. Came already with these white bits around bottom of trunk, have been using rain water to water it so didn’t think was salt build up from tap water. Anyone have any idea on what it is. And how can get rid of it? Or if it’s harmful to the tree etc.

thanks in advance

andy?

If you are absolutely sure it is not lime buildup from the water, then there is only one more possibility, fungus. I would guess mychoriza.

Thanks for that. They could have used tap water in garden centre so could be salt build up but I haven’t used tap water anyway.?

is that fungus bad for the tree??

I do not believe it is salt buildup. I do not think azaleas can tolerate that amount of salt. If it was salt the tree would be in a very bad condition if not dead.

It could be lime buildup. Lime is not a salt. But I doubt it. Azaleas love acidic conditions and lime is on the oposite side of the PH scale.

Regarding if mychoriza is bad or not, I urge you to do some own research. Try Google or any AI tool. I think all the answers you get will be the same.

Anyway: if the white coating is hard: non organic, most likelly lime. If the coating is soft: organic, most likelly mychoriza.

It is not salt, it could be a build up of salts. It looks healthy so why worry about it? If it will come off fine, if not ignore it.

I did not get that fully Geoff.?

How could it not be salt but at the same time could be buildup of salts?

Can't we just agree on that Azaleas do not tolerate much salt and that this amount of salt would not grow that healthy tree?
