Hello all, I am new here. I just purchased my first bonsai tree. I would like to know if anyone can tell me an approximate age of my tree. I think it is a stage above a sapling . But I am open to other opinions again as I am new. Also, I adjusted the wiring on the tree a little bit. I would like to know if it looks good or if I should change anything. And I know right now I’m forming the main structure of the plant and trying to create a good trunk.. I think? Anyways, I was also wanting to know when I can start movement of branches. And how and when to choose which branches to use as the main ones. Or if it’s too young to do any of that, and too young to do any pruning, and if I should leave it alone and just let it grow for a few months/ years . Any info would be greatly helpful . Thanks in advance.?

I do not open unknown links, so my answer is general. If you add pictures to this thread I can be more specific.
It is not possible to determine the age of a tree by looking at it.
The only one that can tell if your tree looks good or not is yourself. What we think is not relevant. What if we think it looks good but you don't? Do you still want to develop it for us to like or do you want to create something that you like yourself?
When to start creating movement depends on what your final goal with the tree is. But the latest point is when it is no longer possible to bend.
How and when to choose branches is a process I do every time I water. If I have chosen the same branches 100 times I know that I am on the right track and can take action. But I do not do it until the right time of the year and only if the tree is healthy. If not, I just wait another year.

Hi, I have attached a few photos of the tree. I really like the current shape of it. Are the branches off the side of the main Part of the tree too small to start movement? Personally, I’m not Looking for reassurance that it looks good, I just wanted to know what others think that I can do with it at this stage in life, Or if it needs a lot more maturing to do Before I start to manipulate the branches.

And in terms of main goal, I would say that may be that I want to have 3 to 4 branches kicking out to the side. A classic bonsai look I would suppose, Since it is my first trial run

I do not consider this to be a bonsai yet, it is just a young tree with wires on that has been put in a bonsai pot way to early.
It needs growth and thickening. That would be my main goal for the next 5+ years. For that a bigger pot and heavier soil will give you most thickness.
What size tree is your final goal? do you know what species it is?

Ohh, It may be a ficus benjamina. If that is the case, no reason to try thickening the trunk. It just do not happen.

You are correct on the species. Since you say it has been wired early, do you recommend unwiring it and let it grow out for a year or a few years or so before wiring it again??
