Ok, I feel like you are being sarcastic or negative. I apologize if I am mistaken. I did not know there was a point when it “becomes a bonsai” I just know I got it from a place that sells bonsai trees. So I guess I should correct myself when talking about it and call it a bonsai”bonsai in the making” or a “tree that I want to turn into a bonsai later on in its life??

Also, the plant originally came from Meehan if you or anyone else Is familiar. They are the ones who done the wiring and ship to the store I got it from.

My english is not perfect, not my mothertounge.

But I want to point out that according to my understanding nobody have written that it was wired too early. My answer to the question if you should remove the wire is that it is up to you. If it supports your final vision for this tree, you can let it be.

Ficus benjamina prefers to shoot new trunks from the soil rather than thickening the existing trunk. without trunk thickening it just fit for forest plantings or literati. For forests it is hard to maintain the imagined amount of trees and design. Traditional literati is most comon conifers. That is why it is not a very suitable species for bonsai.

And no, I am not familiar with Phipps botanical garden or Meehan. I think there is a big ocean between me and those places.?

I would keep the wire, it will add a basic shape to the trunk which is nice for its future development.

The tree is a young plant and if you are serious about developing it into a bonsai, you will need 5 years of strong growth to thicken its trunk. In that case, place it in a larger pot and take it from there. Only strong growth and very little pruning will thicken the trunk.

You might want to check some videos on our youtube channel on trunk development etc.

PS. Selling this as a bonsai would make my customers VERY upset. Its a 2 year old seedling that should not cost more than 5 bucks.

Hmm. In my conditions Ficus benjamina does not thicken the trunk in 5 years. My friend have one given to him after finishing school 35 years ago. It have multiple dtems, but none of them is thicker than 5mm.

What is the best way to stop benjamina from increasing amount of trunks and instead focusing tge energy on thickening one?

The very best advice is find a local club, go to meetings,? and listen to people talk about wiring, shape, and other topics. Take your tree to a workshop and ask for advice, then pick the advice you like best.

I took a tree in to a workshop, and three people gave me four completely different advices; cut all the lower branches, chop it off low, chop it off high, and keep everything but wire the lower branches. I picked a fifth option and air layered it, keeping top and bottom.?

My ficus, BTW, is about 25 years old and the trunk is about 12cm/5in thick.

Ivan: Is your 25 year old ficus a benjamina?
I don't know what it is. It was in a plastic cup at the grocery store, the trunk was probably 3mm thick. The cup may have said species, but it has been gone 25 years. Every year there are a few twigs sticking out of the canopy and I trim them back to maintain the canopy shape. Some interior branches die and I remove them. It keeps the canopy shape pretty well.

In the past I have moved it into larger and larger pots. Now I can barely lift it and I expect my back next year will not have increased strength. It may have to stay in this pot, which is fine with me, but I may be in for some serious root work. The current pot is Chinese, 40cmX50cm, and I? have nothing else that big, so it will probably have to stop growing.?
