Hi there!
I've grown this Juniper from seed ~7,5 years ago, my first (successfully grown) tree. Due to my inexperience, it's had a bit of a rough start resulting in the thin, long stem and awkward branches.
Very quick history:
-2018 Grown from seed, was kept indoors. Grew rapidly, but failed to develop a strong base. (pic 1&2)
-2020 placed outside because of stagnating growth. Started growing again but mostly at the top. (pic 3)
-2023 first attempt at styling and was pruned a little too heavily. Another period of stagnation. (pic 4 and 5)
-2025 the branches are starting to grow and finally looks healthy again. (pic 6)
So the current situation is this long, scrawny stem and way too many branches. Would love to start working on the shape (Bunjingi, maybe?), but I'm not sure how to do it.?
Any and all advice on the basics of bonsai and pruning (or suggested video's, galleries for inspiration etc) would be very helpful!?
Kind regards,
David

Buy a book join a club. That is the best advice anyone can give. Knowing the species also is crucial, as different Pines are treated differently. It has not grown well for that age, it should be thicker and able to stay upright without scaffolding! I think I would be wiring and getting movement into the trunk, and pruning, but it is difficult to tell from the pictures what and where. You need someone local who can help you.? It does not seem to have any branches it is all just short growths on the trunk, what you need is to select some of the shoots and remove others, but only you can do that. There are some good videos here on this web site, have a look at them, they are good value.

I meant Junipers. It may or may not be chinensis. The wiring is poor far too close turns and doing nothing, not thick enough wire.

I would give it a much bigger pot to grow it out for a few years. ATM I do not see any reason for styling other than wire for mowement.
