Hello, my name is Robert and I recently purchased (yesterday) a bonsai from OBI, I guess. Zelkova label says Zelkova, but has white flowers like those of Carmona microphylla (I think it's Carmona 95%). I put pictures in post so if you can help me identify it.
I am watering it when the soil feels dry on touch 2 times (until water flows through the drain and give it 15 minutes break between waterings). I read somewhere that you may want to water the leaves daily, is this right right?
More questions about light, in some places says to put it in indirect light while others recommend it in direct sunlight. What do you recommend?
I took Vitaflora nutrient solution for bonsai. On the label says to use it once every 2-3 weeks, I guess this is fertilization period during the summer.Should i water with it how i water normal (2 times)?
What other advice or suggestion can you give are welcomed.
How you you advice me to prune and wire? And what style is more suitable for carmona.
This isn't my first bonsai, but sadly all of them died before pruning and wiring(water and light problems). I want give this one the best treatment i can offer .
Sorry for my spelling , English is not my native language.

id agee its carmona (fukein tea) zelkova have serrated leaves i believe.light is a big thing if this is kept indoors a window will not be enough. cfl bulbs work fine placed above the tree no more than 6 inches. stick you finger(or a chopstick) in the soil to check it it take longer to dry in the middle.as for the fert if it is designed for bonsai that just water with it like normal. just a tip mix a large amount in a bottle then use only what you need when watering.this makes measuring the correct amount easier

thanks for your answer @manofthetrees. i don't want to use light bulbs
i can put it outside in the balcony in the summer and keep indoor in the winter.
is this beneficial for the plant?
i will try the part with the chopstick.
should i prune it now or let it more time for accommodation with the climate?

the balcony is best as long as it stays above 50F move to filtered sun above 90F . in winter you will need a bulb,a desk lamp with a 40 watt cfl bulb will work fine. yes wait till it shows signs of new vigorus growth before pruning.im not positive but i think carmona have brittle branches so bending older wood is very tough. i think they are styled by pruning and bud selection

Hi Robert
You can wire Carmona, older thicker branches may need a bit more care than usual, they will do OK on a well lit windowsill indoors but they don't like to be moved around too much - a fairly constant temperature and humidity is needed, also free draining soil. I feed mine every 2 weeks with a liquid seaweed fertiliser at recommended strength. As for styling options, recommend you keep it healthy for a while before training, then try to enhance the features that the tree already has. I mean, don't try to force it into something completely different, and don't rush the process. They have a reputation for being difficult to keep - not true, but maybe not as forgiving as some other species. This is mine, not a recent pic but after a first tidy up 6 months ago, and before repotting.

i moved it to a more illuminated windowsill and also put it under a tray with wet sand(i tough that it may help with the humidity). your tips about styling are noted also what are the minimum tools for pruning(now) and styling (later) and where i can find them at good prices ?
