Posted 9 years 1 month ago #25312Google for 'bonsai from nursery stock'. One of the hits will be this website, that is a favorite of many of the forum members:
This gives you a lot of information about what is, and what is not good bonsai, and what to look for in nursery stock.
Let us know if it's helpful. I'm sure everyone here wants to help get you a good grade.

Posted 9 years 1 month ago #25313In that case, perhaps you do not need to own a good bonsai. What you could do, is look at the stages in bonsai development, and the ways they are created, Then go to a nursery, get yourself a ~pair of 4 year old juniper with decent trunk. one you wire up, and train for bonsai life, and after winter you transplant into a training container, doing all the rootwork etc. You then have 2 trees, one the nursery stock and one the bonsai. That can show the people what steps are involved, and how plants change during training.
As I am not sure what is expected, I am not sure whether this would be fitting?

Posted 9 years 1 month ago #25314I think it is important to know what the teacher's actual level is. If he is really trained in Japan and has quality bonsai, the approach will be different then when what he has are mallsai...

As said before: the 'Platinum' status only tells you that the member has posted a lot. It does not say anything about the quality of their posts.
But yeah... who would give such an assignment.
This says a lot about the teacher.
That is why I asked for photos, as that will actually tell us something about the teacher.
If he really has bonsai masterpieces, he will be a proud bonsai grower and may like many of us on the forum: not pleased when someone comes up with a mallsai or seedling to describe what makes a good bonsai.
If he has low quality trees or mallsai... the assignment may be easier. Just praise mallsai, make up a story like the ones on certain websites, advertising junk as masterpieces, and be careful not to step on hist toes when talking about his trees - admire them and tell him they are magnificent...
I know how cynical that sounds. I hate myself sometimes.

Ah, an enlightened one. That really helps.

No it does not. Your advice is bad. The assignment is to come with " with criteria to asses my product by (the bonsai)"
If 'my product' is a seedling: there is NO way you can assess it, other than by the criteria I gave already: is it suitable, will it live ? That is NOT the assignment though, the assignment is not to assess a seedling on future potential, but to assess a bonsai.
Showing up with a seedling will not give her good grades, which she needs. Fortunately there are others here that are willing to help and take the assignment seriously.
I know there are people that say "you show & do what ever you feel you should", we see that remark on this forum occasionally.
I also know the quality of the trees of people that make that statement.
