Hi everyone I hope you can help me. My son bought me what I think is a tea tree bonsai last Xmas. It’s been doing well but lately there are tiny white insects on top of the leaves and black bits underneath. Some leave have black brown patches and fallen off. I’ve ‘washed’ the tree several times with dish soap and water but they keep coming back. They leave a sticky residue. I pruned it last week and it has lots of new growth and even 1 tiny while flower for one day which is closing up and going slightly brown. I do feed it every couple of weeks. I tried moving it away from my herbs and placed it elsewhere but moved it back as it didn’t seem to like it. I really want to save this tree as it has sentimental value. My son is going away and he gave it to me as a symbol of remembrance and long life. How do I get rid of this annoying bug? Any advice appreciated thank you.

I just read an article about coffee grounds, saying that they repel insects as well as being good fertilizer.
We always joke about the claims of something doing everything saying it gives you that school girl complexion, and the article claimed coffee grounds will clear up your complexion, kill fleas on your dog, etc. The claims may be a little overreaching. I have mixed coffee grounds up with my soil mix sometimes but I haven't kept track of which ones so I don't know if those have bugs or not.
YMMV

Sounds like white fly, and the soapy solution should get rid of them, but you need to do it every 10 days. Stop the fertiliser, the tree is too weak, make sure that it is watered and does not dry out. Place it in the sun. You need to spray not wash the leaves. Don't do it more ften than 10 days, it will not help and may damage the plant.

Another white fly solution is sticky traps. Somebody here recommended them to me last year and the white fly problem disappeared. Mine were indoors in the fall, but they should work outdoors. Rain might be an issue.
