Big plans for this little beech next Spring but it may all be for nought if I cannot identify and treat this illness. What is this white stuff?

Let me know if this photo is too blurry and I'll try to get a better close-up. From this photo it looks more like a white smear rather than the actual thin strands as they appear on the leaf itself.

These lice are common at Beeches. Just spray with insecticide

White fly, spray with soapy water every 10 days, it will get rid of then.

Thank you. I started with soapy water yesterday but I worried that it might not be be sufficient so I took marco buijsman's advice and just now gave it a spray of Pyrsol.

It does not happen instantly. There is no need to keep spraying.

I'm only saying that maybe soapy water is not sufficient so I will use Pyrsol instead of soapy water - not n conjunction with it.

Several years ago someone here recommended white fly straps, which were sticky yellow things that attracted white flies. They worked and I haven't had a problem since. Available on Amazon.

I have used the Yellow Fly Sticky Pads for trapping Fungus Gnats with success.
