Depends on your goal. For something like this it would be only about 800 years, give or take a few years.

Ah... there's a topic about the progression of this tree with all the details.
It came from the camping where my parents have had a caravan since I was a young kid.
I'm not sure how old it was when they acquired it and how long they have had it. I got it and have been training it since 2001 so if I have to guess I'd say it's probably about 40 years old.

Again, it depends on your goal. If you go for a smaller size bonsai, it will be quicker.
If you want to grow a decent tree, it will still take years to develop a decent starter plant.

I have a juniper cutting that I wired for practice. The cutting is 2 years old now. With a few more years of growth it may become a cute little plant - which I personally still wouldn't call a bonsai.
