I bought this Fukien tea from lowes home improvement. I was shopping with my friend @wildorchid & he loved it, so I pretended I wanted it for myself. I’m really giving it to him tonight for his new home. I repotted it & made a few trims, but hopefully he can care for it for a long time. To good health!

Nice gesture.
Can you explain the idea behind repotting and pruning it?

I felt that it was a commercial tree & wasn’t potted correctly in the first place. It was potted in regular potting soil & didn’t have a strong root structure. I replaced with a blend I bought from bonsai of brooklyn earlier today. I just felt it needed a stronger base to begin its new life. The small pruning was just my urge to shape. Only 3-4 cuts.

That potting spoil is what comercial producers use to produce trees in. If it is good for production it poses no risk for the tree.
The weak roots is not because of bad soil, it is because the short production time. It is better to let the roots grow strong before repotting.
Althou it is not recommend to start cutting a newly purshased tree, a few strategic cuts just to make the gift look better. Well, I think that is ok.
Please come back to us in a year and show the tree again. I have seen hundreds of dieing fukiens here, but only one healthy. It would be nice to see a few more.
