Here is another big zelkova I dug up yesterday from my step-sons yard. I'm not sure what I am going to do with this one yet. It's in a 27in.X24in. mixing tub. It's about 18 inches across at the base and right now about 4 feet tall.
Pic 1: this is what it looked like in the ground, it was about 12 feet tall.
Pic 2: a shot of the trunk, sorry can't see much.
Pic 3: ready for a ride in the truck.
Pic 4: the hole it came from. I hade to dig it big because I didn't think it was going to have very many roots.
Pic 5: it had way more roots than I thought. You can barely see the big chunk of root that I cut off the bottom, at the bottom of the pic.
Pic 6: all potted up and ready for a new life in a container.
Pic 7: a shot looking straight down at the trunk, yea it has deadwood.

So this is the tree that made you sleep on the couch. I hope it turns out to be worth it. haha. These trunks look mighty straight. What do you plan for this tree?
I'm like you, I can't pass up a free tree.

I got lucky and didn't have to sleep on the couch. :woohoo:
I'm not sure what i'm going to do with this one yet. But I do know that I am going to cut it down quite a bit. So for now i'm just going to leave it alone and let it recover from the dig. In the meantime i'm going to figure out what I will do with it.

I found a bunch of scale on this tree. I just spent a good 3 hours taking care of it and checking my other trees. I scrapped them off and used a soap mix on it. I will have to check on it in a week or two.
I hope the wind stops blowing sometime, I'm tired of seeing windburned leaves. I wish I had a greenhouse.

2 wood stakes and some burlap works great as a windbreak ...much cheaper than a greenhouse.

Good idea manofthetrees but my wife would have a cow. I would have to encircle the whole deck. The wind here is always changing direction. One minute from the south the next from the east. We get weird weather around here. Yesterday it was 42"f, saturday it was 85"f. The winds should be dying down sometime this month, hopefully.

keeping the trees closer to the house may help on the windier days

It was misting all day yesterday. We really needed it tho. I'm going to build a couple of shelfs on the deck, by the house, when I can pry some cash out of the wifes hand for screws. It will unclutter quite a bit and make the trees easier to see. I counted my trees this afternoon, I got 50 trees outside and 16 inside. Forty of the outside trees are scattered on the deck.
I guess I just like my forest in pots.

Sorry I haven't been keeping this up to date. I got a new job and haven't had time to post much. This tree is growing like mad now that the infestation is gone. I have had to trim it 4 times since then. I have also cut out all the rotten wood from the middle of the original stump. Next year will consist of clip and grow, and maybe a little carving.
