I got one of those 'grow your own' sets as a gift and gave it a go... of the 5 or 6 seeds, 4 sprouted and 1 has survived! it must be about a year old now but i am unsure what to do with it. Certainly looks untidy, but i am not sure if i should trim off the stubby growth at the lower end of the trunk... or some of the larger branches... or do nothing for another year and keep it going?

i have read that Jack Pines should go outside at some point, its been indoors for the year its been alive.

Welcome and congrats for your seedling, it looks good.
There are no branches yet, and it shouldn't be pruned for at least three years. You have to be patient with these pine seedlings...

Yes, do nothing, it is still quite young to be trained.
Perhaps, depending on your climate, you could start to train it to be outdoors? It will need plenty of sun, fresh air, breezes and rain to really thrive.

I am in the UK and heading into summer. Sun isnt a given, but we have plenty of breeze and rain and fresh air. One side of my garden is in the sun most of the time so perhaps i will plant it there (edit) reading again i guess you mean just move the pot outside then bring it in over winter?

Its been living on a table in partial sun so far and watered whenever the skewer comes out dry - once a week or so.

Well, the transition has to be slowly. I would put it outside, first days in dappled sun, then gradually move it to full sun, after one or two weeks.
As fresh air tends to dry it faster, you will have to take care of the watering and check it out more often I guess.
In the winter, if it is strong and healthy, move it to an unheated room, like a garage. It should survive an thrive.

I would not move it inside, but leave it out. It is a pine, they take anything that comes their way in the UK, as long as the substrate is well-draining..

It is warm and sunny, there is no reason to have this Pine inside. It needs to be outside in the sunshine.
