Hey everyone. Pretty new to bonsai but quickly becoming an enthusiast. Looking for help with my Alberta spruce. I've read that spruce branches are notoriously soft and therefore quite slow to train. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? My goal is to eventually cover the main root of this tree for the appearance of 3 separate trees growing next to each other. Thanks!

Not really. These species grow in heavy snow region. So as a protetion they bend down with snowfall. And in spring, up to 6 months later, the branches raise themselves. So when wiring it may take a few years of wiring and re-wiring for them to set.
If you wire them when still green, I could imagine it being more stable but do not remember anyone ever confirming that.

Thanks for the reply. Kinda what I figured Haha. I haven't wired it yet but I found that sticking a rock in between spreads them out enough to get good all around growth. Do you think this tree will be able to survive outside in up to -30c in it's current pot?

I heard (or read, cant remember really) a comment from Harry Harrington about spruce branches. His experience was that they tend to remain in their desired form better if you "hurt" the bark, so make really strong bends.
