Hi, new here 1st post.
Got a bonsai today from a local garden centre, I have wanted one for years and never got round to getting one.
It was just labelled as a "名媛直播 tree mix" So I have no idea what species it is. I just liked the leaf shape. Is there anywhere I can go to identify the species, so I can ensure I am caring for it as best I can?
Many thanks.
PS. I noticed the "attachment" option so I have uploaded a pic in case anyone can help. As you can see I have pruned this slightly as it was a bit untidy, as expected. I am going to read more about wiring, as I would like a nice flow to the one side (left on image).

Wellcome to the forum.
First thing you need to do is google the term "mallsai".
Second is to use the tree identification help: www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/bonsai-identification

Great so basically this is not accepted in the world of bonsai, as a "true bonsai tree"
Thanks for that.

Yes, basically. However, there are a lot of Good examples out there on artists that have turned mallsais into Good bonsais.
With dedication and time, you can also be such artist. But first, focus on the health of the tree.

I would not refer to this as a mallsai. I would see this as a young starter. Good to make a small bonsai out off.
As for species, check privet / Ligustrum.
They prefer to be outside. Inside they will struggle to stay alive.

Thanks for the replies here.
Leatherback. I am a little disappointed as this was sold in the "indoor" section. I don't have a garden or any outside space I could use to place this. All I can do is hope that I can give it a little extra care and attention and keep it healthy.
Thanks all!

Garden centers are not the best place to get bonsai. They tend to label outdoor bonsai as suitable for indoors, and also use the term 'bonsai' in a much broader sense than many bonsai enthusiasts... But on the other hand, the Japanese word bonsai literally translates only as potted plant, in which sense you can make a bonsai out of pretty much anything. But as you probably are aware of, it takes years and years
