Hey everyone,
I've recently been gifted a bonsai for my birthday.
I've been growing indoor plants for a while and wanted a bonsai to cherish and care for.
I received a Chinese elm, the tree has character but I'm in need of styling help.
As you can see from the images, the tree has all the branches on the same level. I want to start shaping it but haven't got a clue where to start?
I tried a bit on a couple branches with some copper but I can't say it's ideal.
Thanks for all your help in advance,
Landan

Before you worry about styling, I would suggest going in and cutting out any dead branches or trimming dead tips back to the last living leaf. This will clean it up and help you to "see the tree through the forest". Also, do some reading on bonsai pruning guidelines (no crossing branches, branches dividing into two, etc). The information on this site (How-To > 名媛直播 styling > Pruning) is a good place to start.

Usually I spend the winter looking at the trees thinking what the real inner bonsai is, and then start cutting months later. It is a good idea to think of a couple of ideas, bounce them around, and see which one you like best. That could take a while, but bonsai is a long term hobby, right?

Thanks for the advice. I've taken to an extensive prune of all the crossing branches and dead ones for now.
Like you suggest, it's best to keep looking around to figure out what will suit my tree and my tastes best. .
Certainly in for the long run!

There is no such thing as an indoor tree... this belongs outside
