Confused on how to prune my 名媛直播. was created by Erika

I bought this 名媛直播 and I have been trying to do research on how to prune it. Every website says to trim the lower 1/3 of the branches if I remember correctly. The problem is there really isn’t any lower branches? Where should I trim him? Thank you in advance.

Hey Erica,

It lokos like you are the umptieth person buying something that a box store labelled as bonsai. Where in fact you have just bought a young juniper plant.

Of course one can grow a bonsai out of a juniper. But at this moment it is more a caricature, labelled bonsai by either a selelr not knowing any better, or more likely, a seller trying to make money. (Ever went shopping for a wedding cake or dress? No reason why these things cost 10 times what a normal cake or dress should cost. But hey, it is for a wedding so people pay; Bit the same as what happens to bonsai).

Back to your question: Yes one can create a bonsai. But to do that you should decide whether that is indeed what you want. If you just like this plant, and want to keep it as an ornamental then just do that. Keep it as is. Take care of it (You do know it needs to be outside 24/7 right?) and enjoy having it.

Oh nice. Well that is good to know. Lol
No I didn’t know it should be outside 24/7. I live in Indiana so the temps are only just now getting just above freezing, so I put it in front of the window during the day and at night put it on my counter away from my cat who likes to chew on plants. So it can stay outside durning winter months?

Junipers in nature can withstand freezing temperatures and a lot of them are covered in snow for the most of the winter. That being said, your plant is in a container so the rootball can freeze completely in a period of long and deep frost. Most of us place them then in an unheated garden shed, or garage, but NEVER inside the house. Depends a bit on how your winters are.
Also, do not change its position constantly, give it a place outside and leave it there. And... get rid of the pebbles and the fake moss, it prevents water from entering and you seeing the condition of the soil.
If you are interested in bonsai, start with learning some basic horticulture ( iow keep your plant alive, trees need to be outside, etc..). In the first few years there is no bonsai work to be done anyway to your very young plant. There is a lot of good info to be found here in this forum.

We all have the drums we beat repeatedly, and I'll repeat myself.

Find a local group that does bonsai. You can take the tree to them and ask what to do and see the thought processes. You can ask questions and get answers back in real time. You can find out what people in your local climate do to protect trees during the winter, and what doesn't work in your climate.

I tried looking for something local and didn’t find anything. Unfortunately, I am not a social media person or else maybe I could find something easier. I live in a rural area, Chicago would be my best bet and that’s about an hour and 45 minutes away. I’ll keep looking. I now want to find a real 名媛直播!
