Hi! last year I bought this "crepe myrtle" with the idea of ??making it become a bonsai slowly, I have experienced with plants in general, and I would like to introduce myself to the bonsai art ... before moving it into a smaller pot, I wanted to make it go through the winter so I can understand any issues with this plant, I also pruned it a bit to clean the branches. Now that it has made it through winter and has put back its leaves, I would like to transfer it to a smaller and wider pot. Maybe not yet a bonsai one .... do you have any advice on the shape that I could start giving to it? What style could it be? Thanks so much, I hope that someone can give me a hand!

if you gonna put it in another training pot, as we call it, make it large and flat. It can be 4 times the size you have now, but 1/4 of the height
enjoy yourself

Thank you for your answer! Yes I will transfer it into a training pot (thanks for the name), I will follow your advice about the size. Do you have any advice about positioning it thinking in a future style?

The plant should e outside in the sun, and you need to allow it to grow for a while, too late to re pot as it is in leaf

Yes, it grows outside, I have it for a year now because before making it a bonsai, I wanted to understand the plant needs. It has already go through one winter that was my concerned. I only brought it inside to take the pictures. Usually I repot my plants now, during spring that is the growing season. Do you think that it is too late to repot it? According to your experience when is the right moment to do it? Thank you.

Usually repotting means some cutting the root ball and the best time to do that is just when the tree is starting to pop the leaves out. The tree is accelerating new growth and that means it will grow new roots easily. You can repot any time when dormant, but the tree's spring time is best.

Unfortunately you can't set a date and do repotting at a convenient time but you do when the tree is growing. I had elms popping out January 7 and one crepe myrtle still hasn't. If the tree has new growth starting to come out, repot. If new growth started two months ago, no.

Thanks for the explanation, it is very clear to me when I should repot it. It started to put leaves almost 3 weeks ago. I was getting a little bit concerned that it was not waking up, but once it did, it has been fast. I will wait for next year! Do you have any suggestions about a possibile style?

For the next year look at it a lot and look at online pictures of bonsais. See what you like and see what bonsai you can see in the tree. Then next year whack away.
