Dear All,

Have been caring this Chinese Elm for around 3-4 months now and has significantly grown during the summer. However, I am still unsure of the style I should go for in this particular elm. It does show some characteristics of a possible semi-cascade however I am having some trouble forming an apex at the top of the main branch. Additionally, you could see that a lot of structural changes have been made to this elm hence making it difficult for me to work with in the beginning. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I have attached some front-view and back-view photos of my Chinese Elm below for reference.

Thanks.

I hope you do not have it inside. It possibly could make semi cascade, but not for some years. You need to allow it to grow for this year and next as well. Keep it well watered in full sun and let it grow, then once it has plenty of growth and health then you can think about a style. I would be fertilising and then next spring potting into a slightly larger pot so the plant can continue to grow.

I had a similar question and asked four people at our club. I got four completely different answers. Every one included "but it's your tree".

Let it grow for a while. Look at lots of trees, get some ideas, and look at the tree thinking how each idea applies. Next spring pick one idea and get to work.
