Interesting! I stand corrected. I thought the general principle was to reduce fertiliser use towards the end of the growing season to prep the tree for dormancy? Then use High N in the Spring.

Is this a particular nuance for JBP?

Really useful advice thank you. It seems to be growing strong and I’m pleased I haven’t killed it off - so far at least! I’ve been pondering about planting at an angle to help build more height and trying to balance the left and right - can’t wait until spring and will definitely follow your advice on potting.

I hope next year to be able to join a local club so that I can learn and get further guidance . This bloody virus has scuppered that this year!

Good to see more and more people are abandonning the 0-10-10 myth :)

Nice starter tree indeed. Scotch pine are awesome trees to work with.

How sure are you of your identification? If asked, I would have thought this would be Mugo

I'm pretty confident as the seller had lots of other trees and knew all about them. Also a local nursery stated it was a scots pine. I've googled the two pines and cant really find anything to definitively distinguish between the two. One site says Scots has thinner needles than a Mugo - however I don't have anything to compare!

Hi all, I thought I’d update the thread and hopefully get some more advice ! I took Richard B’s advice - planted it in a bigger pot on a 45degree angle - see attached pics . I hope I understood what you meant Richard?! And I think it’s given me a whole new perspective and greatly improved the trees possibilities! Thank you again! My plan is to remove all the cones now; and then needle pluck/ trim branches hard (leaving only 3 or 4 pairs of needles) to try and force back budding. I’ve been using green dream for fertiliser - refreshed every 4 weeks , with the odd drenching of seaweed extract . Any comments and direction greatly appreciated !
