Ligustrum Sinense Question was created by JDR8820

Hi all,

New to 名媛直播 and received this Ligustrum Sinense for Xmas, I Think it's doing ok so far but I'm wondering whether I should be considering pruning the root growing from the trunk (thin root growing out and down from the right hand side of the trunk) in the first picture? Also, a more general question, should I be pruning new growth at this time of year? (I'm in the UK so it's Winter).

Any advice would be appreciated. Also any general comments on whether it is looking healthy would be helpful.

Thanks!

Your pictures are not visisble.
Without seeing the tree:
- first try to keep it alive for a year ( which is already hard enough for most). Just water when necessary
- to do that it must be outside ( but protect it from long/deep frost byplacing it in an unheated garden shed)

Yes they are visible now.
As I said: place it outside ( inside it will die , no doubt about it) and focus on keeping it alive first.

Sadly, that isn't going to happen, no garden or outdoor space!

..... then you will have a dead tree sooner or later ( probably sooner)

Thanks for your excellent response......If anyone else could answer the original question regarding the root from the original post I’d be grateful for any insight that isn’t “it’s going to die”.

The little root looks dead to me. So yeah, without thinking, clip it off. (In any case, roots that size are not important for a healthy plants' survival.

For the rest, I would just leave it alone. No pruning, let it grow. Trimming back can be done even if the tree grows half a metre taller. For now, make sure you have the care under control.

That’s great thanks. It’s in a south facing window with lots of light and I’m checking it regularly with a water meter. I’ll let it grow a bit before pruning as suggested.
