Water Underneath Wound Sealant? was created by CeramicMonster

Hi, I'm new to the forums so I hope I'm asking in the right place. I made a big cut (1-1.25 inch/25-32mm) with a saw three days ago on my field elm, and when I checked this morning there was LOTS of water underneath the putty bulging it out. It wasn't sap, just water, and it did rain yesterday. I immediately removed the putty, dried the area with a paper towel, and put new putty on (it would only properly stick to the edges). Did I do the right thing? I have new large 11" spherical concave cutters coming today, so I could cut it further back into the trunk making a recessed wound.

Thanks!

How can you tell it is not sap? If you are in the northern hemisphere this is the time sap flow is at its peak. Rain water running down a trunk has no pressure and cannot make the putty bulge.

Well, early spring, the plants are pushing like crazy to get their leaves out. So yeah, it is normal that water comes out. If you then put some paste over, the water can accumulate under it.

Next time, do not make big cuts this time of year. Do it in winter or better, after the first push of leaves has extended.

For now, just leave the cutpaste off, and wait. It can take weeks to months before the tree closes heavily dripping wounds.

Yeh I messed up on the timing sadly, but I have been told elm trees are resilient and should be ok. I probably should just have waited till next year. I will leave it open then. If I wanted to clean it up with the spherical concave cutters, could I do that next year?
