Jacaranda Pruning was created by Bill D

How low can I prune this Jacaranda without hurting it? When I trim the branches they end up just falling off at the trunk. Not sure what I've been doing wrong but would like to cut the tree down to about 6" and let it begin again, if it will. Any help or suggestions is welcome. The tree is 2 years old from a seed.

Thank you,
Bill

I do not see any branches. Did they all fall off? That is strange.

This tree has no branches yet, as LB said.
The leaves start at the trunk. If you cut a leaf back, it might fall off. Because it is not a branch.
You can shorten the tree, at every leafnode. Leafnodes are at the trunk, where leaves emerge.

How do you identify what is a branch and what is just a leaf on a jacaranda? I just got a 5" tall seedling.

Yes no branches yet. You did shorten the leaves it self. Don't cut leaves in half, as it gives the tree more viguer to grow faster to devolp trunk and branches.

I read somewhere that you should cut the leaves back to get them to branch out. Is that incorrect?

Let it grow a couple years before you worry about pruning. It'll give you time to study.
