Hi All,

I have a Japanese Boxwood (Raw Material) that I am planning to (eventually) start styling. Being in Southern California at the start of Autumn, would it be best if I delay this until Spring or does it not matter for this climate?

It is starting to get cooler into the low 50's at night and I am not worried about frost.

Any input on this would be welcomed.

Hello, is the trunk as thick as you wish for the final design?
For how long you have it?

I would like it to be a bit thicker. Was planning to keep it in the same pot for a while after styling.

I've had it for about 1 month.

I never work on my trees until I have had them at least a year.

If you want to thicken the trunk dont prune. However If there are branches that you wish to shange direction or movement on, that can be done while waiting for your prefered trunk thickness.

I agree with Tropfrog, let it grow unprunned in order to thicken, get used to the tree, and take this time to reflect about it...
You have a good material for a double trunk, the main trunk seems to have a good pruning option to build tapper.

I added an rought example image on where I think I would cut in red (once it's about the desired thickness) to form the base tapper, and start working on ramification about the green line... Just remember it's just an rought example, and it's my opinion about your tree, plus, this opinion was formed based on a 2D picture...

Oh, and as Tropfrog said, you can wire the branches that could be usefull on the future...

It seems that it would be a good idea to let it grow a bit first.
