Hello all,

We have recently moved into a new home. The previous owners didn't take care of anything. But luckily, our big Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca Pendula' appears to be in good health.

It has however grown naturally it appears for a long time and is beginning to encroach on the house/deck and look a bit wild.

This tree is the focal point of our front yard, and our views from the house, it is big and dramatic and beautiful. We love it. But we need some help.

I have been an admirer of bonsai ever since I was small. I still have books I made my parents buy me when I was a child that teach you bonsai form. I cant figure out what this tree wants to be and before I start cutting, I figured I should ask for some input from the bonsai world because of the importance of this tree.

This tree is visible as a main focal point from the water in front of our home, and at our pool, we see it from the dining room, the living room, and my office.

In some ways though, it blocks the view of the water front from the house and my office and the hot tub.

Because of this, we originally considered relocating the tree to another area of our yard to allow it to continue to grow free-form, but many arborists have told us it would be seriously expensive and yield a 50/50 chance of survival. Because of this, we've decided to leave this giant in its home and instead guide it into a form that works for us all.

I have attached photos from all sides of this beautiful giant. Don't mind the messes in the yards, we are doing a lot of maintenance the previous negligent owners deferred. Please post inspiration of forms you think this tree is looking to be.

Also please take my photos and draw on them to help me see the form you think is best suited for our tree.

Ideally the final form will help open up the desk, house interior, and hottub views of the water front, but this is secondary (and negotiable) to keeping the tree happy and beautiful in a form it wants to be in.

I'm hoping this tread will start with ideas, and then turn into a follow-along as I shape this tree into the selected form for years to come.

Thanks all

You do realize this is a bonsai forum? It is way too late to do any style choice for this tree. Just prune back what you dont like and what is blocking your view. The tree looks like it has a nice structure and is worth keeping.

Thank you for your reply, even tho it wasn't very kind. I am aware it is a bonsai forum, and I figured I'd find polite folks who could help me figure out a good way to shape this despite its size and age.

If anyone else has constructive advise I'd love to hear it!

WHat you are looking for is called "niwaki", or the art of styling garden trees. Shaping is similar to how bonsai are grown, but with pulleys, bamboo sticks and serious bending skills. Naturally, you can go slow.

If I look at the tree, I see blue as current main branches (From my interpretation of your pics). Pulling some down gives you red, with in green the polsters you could consider.

Do a websearch for images of cedrus niwaki and that will give you some more ideas, perhaps. Personally I am more a fan of natural canopies, rather than pompom-style branches, but that is for you to decide!

I am sorry if my answer came thrue as not polite. I had no intention whatsoever. Sorry, I am not native english speaker.

The thing is that there are a big difference in styling a small bonsai and a huge tree. In bonsai you can shoose to take off parts and know that the area will fill in in 3-5 years. We simply sometimes make it ugly now in order to make it more beautiful in the future. When you remove a branch on this tree, you simply cannot count on that. The figure is proboably 10-20 years before it has grown a new branch in the right proportion. So for this tree it is quite straight forward. Remove what you dont like and keep what you like. Style for now, not for the future.

In bonsai much of the styling process is made by manipulating branches, obviously not possible on this tree. Far too late for that.

If the branch structure was visible in the photos, I could make a suggestion based on my preferences. But the photos is mostly showing foliage and not much of the branches. However, I can see on photo 10 that the first set of branches is on the same place on the trunk. That is not desirable in 名媛直播. I would remove on of them. The left one seems to have a nice movement, but growing in an in-curve of the trunk. Too bad, but I think that is the branch that needs to go (if the tree was mine). I would also prune back to an asymetrical triangular shape and try to create some negative space between branches. Cant tell based on the photos if it could make the tree look better.

I suggest you get yourself the book Niwaki by Jake Hobson and start study before you do anything.
