Pruning advice was created by McCready

Hi all,

I’m a newbie when it comes to 名媛直播, I bought my first one in the summer and it’s doing really well and, having watched some YouTube videos, I’ve been letting it grow wild to thicken up the trunk and branches. I’ve added a photo from when I first bought it and two more as it sits currently for comparison.

Now that we’re into winter, I was wondering where you would advise that I prune, particularly in relation to the vertical branch growing from the top as I think it might look a bit odd, but at the same time I want to try and encourage some sort of shape. Also being a novice I’m not sure what way this type of bonsai will grow. Should I use this vertical branch as the foundation for the next tier of upward growth, or prune it right back and encourage a lower but wider growth?

Also can anyone confirm what species this is as I’ve had two different opinions. It does get some little white flowers that don’t really last long.

P.s. I’m not sure what the icons mean as I’ve literally just setup an account to ask this question, sorry I’m advance if it’s the wrong one.

Many thanks,
Matt

Looks like carmona to me. If it is, dont prune anything until it have made it thrue winter and regained health. It is a stressfull time of the year for the tree and it will need all foliage it can to combat the less favorable conditions.

Thank you for your advice. I have read though that summer and winter are the best two seasons to prune as they store more energy in the trunk? Also would you prune the vertical branch right back or allow it to stick up a bit more with a view to using that as the next tier of the tree?

That may be good advice for a carmona grown in optimal conditions. But since most indoor carmonas fails in winter I dont see any reason to prune before you know if it made it thrue.

I would not grow this tree higher. But that is a matter of personal taste. If you want to grow it higher, do it. If you want to prune it, do it. You are the artist.
