Hi all,

I recently purchased my first bonsai and I’m just wondering if anyone has any tips/ideas on how to style and prune it for future pads.

I’m not sure if there’s any of the larger branches that need a snip or wiring around, in particular the branch coming off the front of the tree towards the viewer. Maybe wiring it around to the left of the tree but I’m not sure if it will obstruct the trunk?

Any ideas or comments on what you would do on the whole tree would be much appreciated!

If any more pictures are needed then let me know and I’ll post them!

Thanks

I think it is good that you start to think about the design. But please do not start to do any drastiskt changes now. Just spend your time learning how to keep it healthy long term. Beginners rushing into big design changes on newly purshased trees seldom makes any success. So for now, put the tree outdoors where it belongs. Keep it well watered and grow wild. When it have growth from this season at least 20 cm long, cut it back to 3-4 leafs on the new growth. Repeat in August. Meanwhile take a few minutes at every watering looking at it and try to find out what you want it to be in the future. If successful first year, in late winter to early spring set your thoughts into action. If not give it another year.

As you now understand, you will have plenty of time to figure out what you want the tree to be. How you like it best. There is no use for me to tell you what I would have done design wice. You are not growing a tree for me, you are doing it for yourself.

But, by all means. Come back in spring 2026 with a picture of the tree and a well defined plan and I will coment on what I think of the plan. For now health is your main focus. It is not possible to design a dead tree.

And again.....Move the tree outdoors, indoors it will die, there are no doubt about it.
