Hello, I think it might be time to prune and start shaping my jacaranda however I read that I should wait 3 years? I started this plant from a seed in January of last year so it's only been alive for 16 months and it's already 40" tall. If I need to keep waiting that's fine but can I at least cut it so it stops getting taller? Lol?

It is not a good species for bonsai, but if you want to do it fine. You need to decide what you want from the plant, do you want a small tree of around 20cm or do you want something that is taller with a thicker trunk, if the latter then it needs a bigger pot than it is in at the moment. It also needs a lot more light than it is getting right now. I would let it grow for another season, then cut down and start trying to form branches.?

I totally agree with Geoff. What made this tree so high and week is called elongation. A symptom of lack of light.
I would plant in a bigger pot and let it grow wild in as much light as I can provide. However up here in the cold north, there are just not enough light in winter. So I gave up on the species.

Led light works. But as always, intensity makes a difference. Most cheap led grow lights is like 5-10 watts. That do not make much difference. If you want to grow bonsai under artificial light, get ready for heavy equipment investments.
Or you just do as 99,9% of the hobby. Grow locally hardy species outdoors. There are reasons for that and expensive equipment and electricity bills is just one of them.?

I dont know what made me think it wanted indirect light! We just recently made our sunroom climate controlled so I can absolutely give it 6-8 hours of direct sun and repot it. Sorry if I'm just asking you to repeat yourself, but is that the best way to have it correct itself? Should I give it a support pole as well and not trim or prune it? I actually decided not to bonsai it and maybe just let it grow into a nice indoor tree as I can't plant it outside given my area is too cold in the winter.
Thanks for your input!

In more light it will grow more leafs. More leafs makes it more top heavy but fuel thickening faster. If it cannot stand by itself, some support may be needed until it is strong enough to support the foliage.
