Help with pruning ideas was created by scoll7567

Hi All,

I have had this tree for about 3 years and I have just let it grow with some minor pruning and cleaning. I live is Southern CA so it gets a lot of sun and it has grown well. As you can see by the pictures, it has grown pretty significantly over the past couple of years. I'm looking for ideas on how I should prune it. As you can see it is growing like crazy on one side. Thoughts?

As far as I can see there is only one big concideration here. That is to use the long extension for cascade or semicascade style or to cut it off. I know what I would do, but you need to decide for yourself what you like. If you chose the latter, late winter to early spring is the right time.

Other than that junipers are more of a long term maintenance species than a big one time styling species. You need to learn how to yearly thin out chose growth points and wire branches into place in order to develop the tree. Every single growth point needs one separate decition and every years work need to be based on last years decitions and support the long term goal. The small size on procumbens needles and the amount of growth points makes this cultivar a very time consuming and knowledge demanding species to develop. I think I spend 3-4 hours of full concentration to the task every year on my cascading one. But I can only maintain full focus for 40-50 minutes at the time and those slots is hard to find. So it spends weeks on the work table every spring.

TBH, most experienced bonsai keepers stay away from this cultivar. But I find them charming and I enjoy developing mine. I started with it in 2019 and are still learning, still trying to figure it out. I see it as a development of my own skills and patience almost more than development of the tree. Because I grow more than the tree :).

Good luck in your own development.

BTW: please try to avoid using local acronyms. This is an international forum and most people here do not know where southern CA is. I am in western VG, do you know where that is?:)
