Purpose of a Pot without drainage holes was created by Marcei

Hello all,

I bought a chinese elm online today. It came in a pot without drainage holes and there is a water level gauge near it. I will put some holes under the pot but just wondering what is the purpose of this pot? when I contacted with the seller and asked what is the gauge for they answered it should be always kept on `optimal`. Which requires 2-3cm thick layer of water must stay in the pot, all times... I wont do it of course, will put holes in it and will get rid of the water level gauge. But still, the place I bought them is a decent bonsai shop. So I think they have a reason for this. But what..?

Thanks for the help

Purpose is that you surely kill your plant this way so you have to buy a new one

The only purpose was to sell the plant they do not care if it lives once they have your money. Get it into a pot with holes as soon as you can. Today if possible, just drop it into a pot the same size/

I agree with the others. The seller really doesn't have a clue, or they just don't care.

Do make the drainage holes. You may have to repot as well. Do not use that gauge, it is useless.

Should I immedeately repot ( without root pruning maybe ) or wait for the spring?

After posting my reply I checked and saw something funghy underneath the soil. Its like cotton when I look closely. What should I do, how should I care after the treatment?

Thanks

not really a decent shop if they are trying to have customers drown plants. Surely they must get a lot of unhappy customers with plants cared for like that.

Changed soil, put drainage holes(worked on that pot; added legs etc), pruned the roots a little to get rid of that white cotton things that looks like funghi. Added its own moss again on soil surface.

Thats the current look now. Anything else I should do? By the way it is 15celcius to 7 celcius at nights here so I placed it inside.

Normally Chinese elms are winter hardy... 15 to 7 at night shouldn't be a problem. Was it outside so far the whole year? if so, you might want to consider leaving it there.

If you pruned the roots, you might want to keep it shaded for about a week or so until, you see new growth. as the roots pruning does cause stress.

Thank you very much!

At what time of year, around what temperature should I take it indoors then? Should I care it just like other frost hardy trees (maples, junipers etc)?

As far as I know, chinese elms are outdoor bonsai, but should be cared a little more than others when temperatures are lower than freezing point
