The advice is always early spring, which is perfectly correct.
Here in Birmingham, Alabama, it is early February, 67° F, several of my trees have bids with leaves appearing, and one thing I know for sure is that sometime next month or so it will be below freezing, and maybe again in April. I have to repot the elm trees because they are completely pot bound. Now? Wait till after the next freeze?

Well.. I suppose you will have to have some space to protect them from frost anyway right? So you could repot now (If indeed the first buds are breaking open). Then just protect them from hard freezes like you would do anyway.
Just as a side-note: The trees i my growing bed are moved & have rootwork done in the dead of winter. I have not lost trees yet to the timing of repotting. So I am less worried about this than some others. Did you see this:
Frost in itself is just tricky once the trees start waking up. The trees loose their frfost hardiness quickly.

Interesting article, thanks for that. Freezing ground is almost not a problem here. We have had several nights this year down to 26-27 and one down to 12 but mostly we consider 45 frigid. My son in Rochester NY laughs when we say, "winter". We have most years a cold snap in March. I will repot, and watch for that, moving those reported as necessary.

When your plant shows these type of symptoms then undoubtfully go for rerpotting:
You see lots of roots coming through the drain hole.
You find matted roots near the soil surface.
You slip the plant from its container and you see more roots than soil
I use to plant my 名媛直播 in as its good pot for bonsai
